International Week 2025: An Immersion into American Practices with Dr. Ray Butts and Ms. Virginia Flores

As part of the annual International Week at CEERRF, made possible through the Erasmus+ program and our global network of partner institutions, students had the exceptional opportunity to benefit from the teaching of Dr. Raymond Butts, renowned physiotherapist, osteopath, biomedical engineer, and internationally recognized researcher.

Working with 2nd- and 3rd-year students, Dr. Butts delivered a series of theoretical and practical sessions focused on mobilization and manipulation techniques of the lumbosacral spine, thoracolumbar junction, and ribs, along with introductory workshops on dry needling for knee osteoarthritis.

His teaching method—structured around demonstrations, hands-on practice, and work in pairs and small groups—enabled students to discover and assimilate these techniques in a secure and dynamic learning environment that fostered dialogue and mutual learning. Dr. Butts’s ability to teach in English while ensuring students felt at ease contributed to their active participation, well beyond any language barrier.

For 3rd-year students, an additional module on « circular pathology » therapy was co-led by Dr. Butts and Ms. Virginia Flores, a clinical nurse specialist trained in Florida. This session offered a genuine multidisciplinary physiotherapy–nursing approach to managing post-cancer and post-cosmetic surgery recovery. Students were introduced to drainage techniques derived from North American practices, broadening their perspective and providing an international and multireferential outlook on their future profession.

The hands-on, engaging workshops allowed students to practice drainage, manipulation, and bandaging techniques in realistic conditions, in pairs, within a collaborative and inquisitive atmosphere. This immersive experience not only strengthened their technical skills but also enhanced their professional openness and adaptability.

« This week was truly fascinating, especially the sessions on lymphatic drainage, dry needling, and ultrasound. We really wish we had more time for these topics! Ms. Flores and Dr. Butts offered highly complementary and enriching approaches. Ideally, we would love to have at least a half-day of hands-on practice to fully experience the techniques and better understand their clinical relevance.» — 3rd-year student.
